Guitar King, 2018
A series of fortunate events resulted in an executive producer credit on a film about the making of Galaksi Palapa, a record by an Indonesian band Kelompok Penerbang Roket or as the cool kids call them, KPR.
I was invited to see the band play in a dive bar in Kemang, a neighborhood in Jakarta, Indonesia which as overflowing with sweaty, screaming fanboys, packed to the walls, and well, like nothing I had experienced since I booked the Horny Mormons to play Club Scream a few decades ago.
Standing with his back to the crowd, and facing the pounding wall of sound coming from the drum kit, guitarist Rey Marshall stood strong, a beacon of white against the sea of black shirted kids.
By the end of the night, my ears were ringing, my shirt drenched from the heat in the room, and my patience for moshing kids had worn thin. But I had a great time, and still play their record from time to time.
